This resort, which has been named to Golf Magazine's list of "Silver Medal Resorts," features three unique 18-hole courses.
The Arthur Hills Course, the most challenging of the three, was refurbished in 1995 during which all 18 greens were rebuilt. Water hazards come into play on many holes, and the medium-sized greens are somewhat undulating. The Arthur Hills course rated an impressive 4 1/2 stars and was noted as an "excellent course" by Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play." This 6,651-yard course was designed into its natural surroundings, the Hills at Palmetto Dunes is a perfect blend of beauty and challenge. The scenery is outstanding: thick stands of palmettos line the graceful course which is built on a series of rolling dunes. However, off-balance lies and ocean breezes will remind you to keep your eye on the ball. This natural wonder has won many awards ... and the hearts of many Hilton Head golfers.
If you're looking to test your mettle, the 6,873-yard George Fazio Course is the right place. Fazio offers a series of long par 4s, loaded with bunkers and water hazards - demanding a combination of length and precision play. The George Fazio Course was also built on the natural terrain, but it was designed like the more traditional courses. The small greens are severely undulating, and the fairways are tree-lined. This course requires several shots over lagoons in order to reach some of the greens. From the 432-yard first hole to the 462-yard 18th, this is regarded by many as the island's truest championship challenge.
The Robert Trent Jones Course is a links-style design that plays out towards the ocean. Some of the large greens are undulating, and the fairways are well manicured. The terrain is flat, and some holes play alongside lagoons. The 7,005-yard Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course, which was renovated in 2002, received accolades from Golf Magazine as 'The Pick of the Month' in March 2003. Readers of Golfweek Magazine have ranked it among the best in the Southeast. One of the classic works of the legendary designer, the Jones offers well-bunkered greens and generous landing areas - with a lagoon system winding its way through 11 holes. The signature hole, the par 5 10th, brings you to a spectacular view of the Atlantic.
